How do you cut off denim pants/shorts/etc., so that the denim doesn’t fray?

When you buy jeans already cut off, the denim doesn’t fray when you wash it, and there is no visible stitching to hold it together. How can I do this at home?

Generally speaking, you can
1) apply something to keep the fraying down. There’s a product called “fray-check” that is desiigned to do that. However, it’ll stiffen the edge of the fabric and prevent it from handling naturally.

2) you can run a line or two of zig-zag, or better yet, lock-stitch (looks like a zig-zag but is actually made up on multiple stitches on each “leg” around the cut edge, 1/2 to 3/4 of a stitch in to stabilize the fabric.

3) hem the cut edges.

I would bet that professionally unhemmed garments have either a woven-in stabilizer or a chemical stabilizer that’s bonded to the fabric to keep it from fraying.
